Previous examples

We think out of all of the previous student group works, this one was the best. The group clearly used different camera shots and angles and we thought that the tone of the lighting used was perfect. We thought that they were very creative especially at the end when we see the girl in the bathroom and then all of a sudden we see quick flash shots of two people in the bath: one dead and the other looking as if he's coming for you. This we think should be an A grade because it made sense, it was scary and they were very creative with the camera angles/shots and the overall plot.

BBFC research

Looking at the guidelines of what needs to be included in a 15 certificate, we think our film is more like a film which deserves an 18 certificate. For the 15 certificate we're not allowed to show violence which dwells on injury or pain or any gory images which our film most probably will.

Example of last years slasher film

This is last years slasher film. In our view we think this group's work would be a level 3 (C grade). The film is good in terms of a variety of shots used, controlled camera work and using appropriate images and titles used. But obviously watching it we thought that there wasn't much creativity used. We think that it's a pretty good storyline with how the girl walks in on the killer with a dead body. But we think that the lighting could be made a bit darker to add more of an effect on the audience and to make it seem more scary. Also we think the costume the killer is wearing really isn't good because in other slasher films such as 'Halloween' and 'Nightmare on Elm Street' the killer is either wearing a mask or with 'Nightmare on Elm Street' the killer's face looks all mangled so that you can't identify who the killer really is. Whereas in this group's work the killer is just wearing a hoody which really isn't scary. Overall though it's a reasonably good film with different camera shots and angles used but we just think that it was lacking creativity.

Intentions for our film

Because we're doing a slasher film there are obviously some props, characters and other things that we feel that we have to include:
A killer
A weapon - mainly a stabbing implement
Some creepy music - to suggest stalking
But we would also like to include a few other things that we think will make our opening make more sense and a bit more scary:
A child's toy
An old caravan
A mask - which could also be something compulsory that we need to include in our film.

Examples of titles from our sub-genre

Halloween
Nightmare on Elm Street

These 2 videos are examples of other title sequences from 2 slasher films. The ideas that we can take from these are mainly the creepy music as if you're being stalked. From 'Halloween' we like the idea of the pumpkin getting closer and closer as if it was the killer getting closer and closer. Obviously with us we won't use a pumpkin but we may use another prop in a similar way to how they used it and maybe in a slightly faster pace. With 'Nightmare on Elm Street' we also like how you see the killer making his finger blades and then at the end of the sequence we see him wearing his blades. What we're thinking of doing is to show the audience our killer's upbringing from his mother with flashes of him preparing to go out and kill someone.

Nine frame screen grab of 'Halloween'

Here is a nine frame screen grab from 'Art of the Title'. This is a nine frame screen grab of 'Halloween'. The title information is very good for establishing that it's a slasher film because in a slasher film there is always something significant to either the killer or when the film is set. For this using a pumpkin links to the title of the film 'Halloween' because pumpkins are a key factor and symbol of the night halloween. This establishes what genre it is from how you seem to be getting closer and closer to the pumpkin which links to the killer getting closer and closer to his next victim.

Our images using 3 point lighting

The first 3 images we used each light separately and the final image is where we used all 3 lights. In the first image we used a key light. Then in the next image we used fill light. In the third image we used a backlight. Then finally we used all 3 lights together.
